About The Kits

Prototype

Model
This is the HO scale KIT version of the Sawdust Burner, located in Drain, Oregon, USA. The kit includes all of the 3D-printed parts and other materials, sans paint and adhesives, necessary to complete the burner you see here in the photos. Thorough and precise instructions are included. Supporting documents include full-color images of the prototype, a copy of official record noting the Drain (South Umpqua) Burner on the Oregon Historic Places list, and architectural measurements. A 2.5 hour YouTube video to assist you is on the Coastman's YouTube channel (search for that in your preferred internet browser).
Canopy glue, a high-quality glue stick, and/or CA, are necessary to complete the kit. This is a craftsman's kit!
A note about the size: The initial release of this kit was already 82% of the prototype. However, several modelers suggested a smaller footprint still. I therefore developed two smaller versions: one was 80% of the original, and the other 70%. The 80% is now a kit (which I dubbed "80P"). The 70% is not available as a kit, but I keep completed, painted models in stock and available on this site.
I also have what I refer to as 80% and 70% sized models for sale. See the "Burners For Sale" page, which provides an explanation of what I mean by "80%" and "70%", with photos. I try to keep them in stock, however these are often made-to-order as they sell out quickly.
Please note that I am no longer including the variable-temperature soldering iron with the kit. This is the tool which I prefer to “weld” the 3-D printed PLA material together. I understand that CA works equally well. The instructions include some information about using CA effectively. The variable temp iron can be found on ebay. As of 2/6/25 an effective link to that item was (click here).

Check out this circuit add-on for a burn-in-progress effect! (More video posted on the homepage).
Chris tells us how to do it:
What I did was cut a circle using a 2-1/2” hole saw and some plastic. I cut a notch in it so I could get it inside the center ring where it sets. Paint it black, Then I drilled five holes out about a ½-3/4” around the center hole. And then I hot glued these LEDs into the holes. 3 amber and 3 reds. On Ebay pre wired leds flickering candle sold by Lighthouse-leds $9.04 a 5 pack 12v.
